The new face of Zooomr

Updated 10/29/2007: I’ve revised my opinion of Zooomr since I wrote this. See “Taking a break from Zooomr” for the details.

It looks like Zooomr’s Mark III is shaping up to be a spectacular release, and I can’t wait to see it and try it out! Kristopher Tate, Zooomr’s creator and always a tease, posted a screenshot of what the Photos page for a user profile will look like. My gosh, it looks spectacular!

Among the new features I can spot are:

  • Storefront, which I assume is the photographer interface for Zooomr’s new Marketplace,
  • Analytics, which will probably offer all sorts of data goodies about how one’s photos are used and accessed (and possibly bought),
  • Groups (yes!), and
  • Zipline, which could be the evolution of Zooomr’s Recent Activity section.

A big change is the option to view more than 18 photos on a photo page, which I definitely like. I assume the three small icons next to “Your Photos” can toggle various views of the page. A problem with posting more than 18 photos at a time to one’s Zooomr or Flickr account is that they get lost. People don’t usually go past the first page, and those photos get no views. What’s the point of sharing them if no one’s enjoying them? So the option to display more than 18 photos is a biggie. Now if only the Zooomr feeds would be modified to show all of the photos that a user posts, not just the latest 20, I’d be pretty happy.

I love the clean new look, love the new options, and I can’t wait to use Mark III thoroughly! I hear when it launches, Zooomr will move to Amazon’s S3 service to host photos, which will mean blazing fast download speeds. No more waiting for a photo to display! The only bottleneck will be my (or your) Internet connection, and that’s great news!

Thomas Hawk, Zooomr’s CEO, also wrote a blog post detailing this. Have a look at that as well. I leave you with another teaser screenshot, this time of the Zipline, also courtesy of Kris.
